Sa oti na taki wai - Duidui villager “overjoyed” at news of water supply upgrade
Created on: Thursday, 02/11/2017   Print this page

Representatives of the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) Water Development Affairs Department met with the residents of Duidui Settlement to advise them that the work to upgrade their water system is included in the 2017 to 2018 budget and would begin soon.

Duidui is in Cakaudrove i Vanua District, Cakaudrove Province, on Vanua Levu, about an hour’s drive from Savusavu Township. Comprised of susbsistance farmers, it is part of the village of Nakobo, but is located three miles away.

Mother of five, Mrs Eseta Tavai, was one of the happiest recipients of the news from WAF. She said that her home is one of two not receiving any water because of their high elevation.

“My house is located right on top of the hill and I have to go down with my bucket to fetch water in the morning, at night, and even when it rains,” said Mrs Tavai.

“I remember the time we started fetching water when one of my children started schooling in class one and that’s the time I started carrying water from the nearest tap to our house, a distance of about 200 metres, and I have to climb up a long hill. That daughter is now in Form 3. That’s almost eight years of fetching water up this hill.

“Sometimes I got sick from the stress of carrying water up this hill. I am fed up with fetching water while others just have to take few steps.”

At times, Mrs Tavai takes her laundry to her parents’ home in Nakobo, returning home in the afternoon, after washing her clothes.

“Now, when I hear that WAF is coming within a few weeks for the upgrading of our village water supply system, I could not express my joy. I am so overwhelmed by this news, and rejoicing, because finally I know that God has seen all the hard times I have gone through in fetching water for my family.”

Mrs Tavai said she had already bought all the materials “a long time ago” to install a flush toilet, but there has been no water.

“I tell you, I am willing to do anything during the construction period of our water project, whether it be carrying sand or gravel, just to let the water flow and reach my house,” said Mrs Tavai.
